Quick answer

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the bone has bonded to it, which usually takes a few months, a crown, bridge or full-arch prosthesis is attached on top. Implants are a long-term option for replacing missing teeth, but suitability depends on bone, gum health and general health, which is assessed by examination and imaging.

Treatment options covered on this page

Who may be suitable?

  • Adults with one or more missing teeth, or teeth that cannot be saved.
  • People with enough jawbone to hold an implant, or who can have bone added first.
  • People whose gum disease is treated and controlled.
  • Patients able to keep up cleaning and regular check-ups afterwards.

Who may not be suitable, or needs assessment first?

  • Children and teenagers whose jaws are still growing.
  • People with untreated gum disease or active infection in the mouth, until it is treated.
  • Heavy smokers and people with poorly controlled diabetes may face a higher risk of failure and need individual assessment.
  • People taking some bone medicines (for example certain bisphosphonates) or who have had radiotherapy to the jaw need specialist assessment first.

How is suitability assessed?

At Adil Dent the first step is usually photographs sent on WhatsApp, together with any recent X-rays you already have. A panoramic X-ray or a CBCT (3D) scan is requested only when the case needs it. From that the clinic can give preliminary information about the likely treatment, duration, cost and steps. The final treatment plan is confirmed only after an in-person examination at the clinic, with imaging where needed, because bone volume and gum health cannot be measured from a photograph.

What does treatment involve, step by step?

  1. 1Remote review of photos and any existing X-rays; preliminary information on WhatsApp.
  2. 2In-person examination at the clinic, with a panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan where needed.
  3. 3Written treatment plan stating the planned procedures and the agreed cost, before treatment starts; consent forms in Turkish, English or Arabic.
  4. 4Implant placement under local anaesthetic; any extraction or bone grafting the plan includes.
  5. 5Healing period while the bone bonds to the implant (osseointegration), often with a temporary tooth.
  6. 6Second visit: the final crown, bridge or full-arch prosthesis is fitted and the bite checked.
  7. 7Official invoice for the amount paid, and treatment documentation the clinic can stamp, to take home.

How many visits and trips does implant treatment take?

Commonly two trips: one for examination and implant placement, and a second for the final teeth once the implant has bonded to the bone, usually a few months later. Bone grafting can lengthen the gap. In some cases a temporary tooth or bridge can be fitted in the first trip, but whether that is possible depends on how stable the implant is at placement, so it cannot be promised in advance.

What materials are used?

Adil Dent Clinics works with implant systems from several manufacturers, including Swiss and American brands. Each implant is supplied with its manufacturer’s certificate and documentation and carries that manufacturer’s warranty. The implant system and the material of the crown or bridge are chosen for each case and named in your written treatment plan, so you can see them before treatment starts. Implant warranties are connected to the implant manufacturer and subject to that manufacturer’s terms; ask for the system name and component record to be included in your documents.

What are the alternatives?

  • Fixed bridge

Crowns on the neighbouring teeth support a false tooth. No surgery, but the neighbouring teeth are prepared.

  • Removable denture

Partial or full dentures are removable and avoid surgery, but are less stable than fixed options.

  • Keeping the tooth

Root canal treatment and a crown can sometimes save a damaged tooth.

  • Leaving the gap

A reasonable choice for some gaps; your dentist can explain the effect on neighbouring teeth and bite.

What are the risks?

  • Swelling, bruising and discomfort for a few days after surgery are common.
  • Infection around the implant, either soon after placement or later (peri-implantitis).
  • The implant not bonding to the bone and needing removal and, possibly, replacement later.
  • Rarely, nerve injury in the lower jaw causing numbness, or sinus problems with upper-jaw implants.
  • Mechanical problems later, such as a loose screw or a chipped crown.

What is recovery like, and what aftercare is needed?

Most people return to normal activities within a few days, but healing time depends on how many implants were placed and whether bone grafting was done. Follow the written aftercare instructions you are given: keep the area clean as instructed, avoid smoking, and eat what the dentist advises while the implant heals. Ask the treating dentist, not a general rule, when it is suitable for you to fly. After you return home, follow-up communication with the clinic is available, and you should also register with a local dentist for routine checks.

How long does the result last?

Implants can last many years, but no implant is guaranteed to last for life. How long an implant and its crown last depends on cleaning at home, regular professional check-ups, not smoking, the forces from your bite (including grinding), and general health. The crown or bridge on top may need repair or replacement over time even when the implant itself is healthy.

What should international patients know before travelling?

  • Send clear photos of your teeth and any X-rays from the last year as files; the clinic will say if a panoramic X-ray or CBCT is needed.
  • List your medicines and medical conditions, especially blood thinners, bone medicines and diabetes.
  • Plan for two trips and confirm the dates in writing before booking flights; you book your own flight, and the clinic organises hotel arrangements and transfers.
  • Under the clinic’s current policy, no deposit is requested before you travel.
  • Before leaving, collect your aftercare instructions, imaging, the implant system name and the stamped treatment documentation.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dental implants last?

Many implants last for years, but none is guaranteed for life. Longevity depends on cleaning, check-ups, smoking, bite forces and general health, and the crown on top may need replacing over time. Ask for the implant system name so a dentist at home can maintain it.

Does implant placement hurt?

Placement is done under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb during the procedure. Soreness, swelling and bruising for a few days afterwards are common and are usually managed with the pain relief your dentist recommends. Tell the clinic if you are anxious; options can be discussed at the examination.

Can implants be finished in one trip?

Usually not. The final teeth are normally fitted after the implant has bonded to the bone, which takes months, so most patients make two trips. A temporary tooth may be possible in the first trip, depending on implant stability on the day.

Can I get a price before I travel?

You can receive preliminary information about the likely treatment, duration and cost from your photos and X-rays. The agreed cost is stated in the written treatment plan after the in-person examination, because imaging at the clinic can change what is needed.

Do I need a CBCT scan?

Not always. A CBCT scan gives a 3D view of the bone and is used when that detail is needed to plan implant position. The dentist decides whether you need a panoramic X-ray, a CBCT, or both, after reviewing your case.
