Premolars sit in the middle — visible when you smile broadly, but taking real chewing load. Both materials are defensible there, and your dentist should explain which they are choosing and why for your specific bite.
The other honest grey area is heavy grinding. If you grind your teeth, zirconia's strength usually wins even in visible positions, and a night guard becomes part of the plan regardless of material.

- Is it monolithic or layered, and does that change the strength?

What Actually Determines the Result
Material is roughly half the equation. The other half is the dentist's preparation, the impression or digital scan accuracy, the technician's skill, and how well the shade was matched. An excellent E.max crown made from a poor impression will look and fit worse than a well-made zirconia one.
